Bill Damaschke, President and CCO of WBPA, took center stage at Annecy to announce a fresh start for the studio. He emphasized their commitment to creating original, theatrical films that celebrate diversity in style but unite under a common thread of heart, hope, and humor.
The Slate: A Diverse Lineup
The studio unveiled an impressive slate of seven upcoming features, including the long-awaited “The Cat in the Hat”, starring Bill Hader, and “Bad Fairies”, both set for theatrical release. Damaschke also highlighted collaborations with Locksmith Animation for “The Lunar Chronicles” and other projects, showcasing their commitment to global partnerships.
Putting Caution Behind
Looney Tunes fans will recall the studio's controversial decision to shelve “Coyote vs. Acme”, a move that raised eyebrows and highlighted a period of corporate caution. However, Damaschke aims to leave that era in the past, emphasizing the importance of creative freedom, a lesson learned from the golden age of Looney Tunes.
Building a Creative Community
Since Damaschke's appointment three years ago, WBPA has expanded its team significantly, now boasting over 250 artists and filmmakers worldwide. With partnerships across DC Studios and other third-party entities, the studio has created a diverse, global creative community of over 1,200 animation enthusiasts.
A Diverse Range of Projects
The studio's upcoming slate is diverse, featuring projects like “Maggie Claus”, a holiday film from Melissa McCarthy, and “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!”, a musical adventure based on the Dr. Seuss book. They're also venturing into the world of Hello Kitty and the Batman universe with “Dynamic Duo”, showcasing their willingness to explore various genres and styles.
The Real Test
While Damaschke's pitch was impressive, the true test of WBPA's revival will come when these projects hit the big screen. Only then will we see if Warner Bros. has successfully turned the page and regained its position as a creative powerhouse in animation.
